I didn’t realize this Koenigsegg is nearly 10 years old now but when the Agera RS was launched back in 2015 it was the big thing in the hypercar world, it ended up becoming a record breaker and one of the most impactful cars Koenigsegg ever produced and to be honest, it still is to this day.
Koenigsegg had introduced the Agera RS as a lightweight, performance, track-oriented version of the Agera. Although Koenigsegg had been producing cars for many years, I think many felt that there was something special about the Agera RS from the moment it was unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.
The Agera RS doesn’t look visually that much different from any other Agera, but the internals of the car contain several different features and parts from other Agera variants and the special edition One:1 model. Like other Koenigseggs the Agera RS is highly exclusive with only 25 units produced.
Since the Agera RS is lighter, it allowed for higher speeds compared to the other Agera variants and this is what made it possible for the Agera RS to achieve the ultimate top speed record for a production car. This happened in November 2017 when the Agera RS was driven two ways on a stretch of highway in Nevada, United States that was closed specifically for the record attempt.
The Agera RS reached an official top speed of 447 kilometers per hour and in addition to that it also broke the 0-400-0 record during the very same run in Nevada. Both records have been broken since, but it still is a great reminder that the Agera RS once upon a time was the king of hypercars.
Now that it’s nearly 10 years since the arrival of this record breaking Koenigsegg, it feels like a good time for me to reflect about it. There is no question the Agera RS has secured its place in the history of hypercars, after all it broke several records and is still one of the fastest cars of all time.
But the other thing about the Agera RS is that in my opinion it’s also one of the most important cars in Koenigsegg’s history, as that was the car that really put Koenigsegg on the world stage with it’s achievements and showed how capable Koenigsegg cars can be. Sure, people liked the CCX but the brand was still not really that known outside of supercar enthusiast circles and it was the Agera, especially the Agera RS that really resulted in Koenigsegg’s rise in popularity worldwide.
The success and popularity of Koenigsegg has since continued with cars like the Regera and Jesko, but the Agera RS still remains one of the most sought after hypercars both in terms of general enthusiasts and photographers as well as buyers, with an example selling for as much as $3 million.
