A Rare 1989 BMW M3 Convertible Is Going For Auction

a black 1989 BMW E30 M3 Convertible

As the first generation of the BMW M3, an E30 M3 is already something that’s not easy to come across. A convertible? Even harder, as only a total of 786 E30 M3s were made in the convertible form.

This 1989 example is going to be offered at the RM Sotheby’s Munich auction on 20th November and is estimated to sell for somewhere between €70k to €100k. Finished in Diamond Black with a black leather interior, this car was delivered new to Spain and remained there with its first owners for 36 years. With 140,387 km on the odometer, it’s clear the original owners enjoyed this car and it has been used well.

The E30 M3 was made as a road legal model directly based off BMW’s Group A touring car racers (which was necessary for homologation rules) and the car would be powered by the BMW S14 four-cylinder engine. The S14 comes in a couple of configurations and this car features the 197 hp configuration, which is apparently quite rare on this already rare convertible.

But no matter what engine configuration, the E30 M3 convertible is about pure performance while offering an open top driving experience. Though it lacks the iconic spoiler of the coupe, that doesn’t make it any less sporty. With a balanced chassis that helps with high-speed handling and cornering, this convertible is capable both on road and on track.

The E30 has risen in value by quite a bit in recent years being the first generation of the legendary M3 line and because of how rare the convertibles are, it’s no surprise they usually go for higher prices compared to the coupe counterpart.

Classic BMWs certainly have their own following, particularly older M models like this one. However, this E30 M3 convertible is more than just another classic sports car and since only 786 of these were made, this auction gives collector’s a chance to own a rare and significant piece of BMW history.
