McLaren are known for making several iconic supercars and hypercars. A few years ago however, McLaren’s Special Operations division created a rather mysterious hypercar made exclusively for certain U.S clients who wanted “a show car for the road” as MSO likes to call it. Called the Sabre, it’s fast, ultra rare and something special.
Although the car is based on the Senna, it’s absolutely unlike any McLaren ever seen and that’s the most special thing about the Sabre asides from it’s exclusivity. The aerodynamics and design are completely unique especially with the way those outer side edges and the spoiler of the car combine with the main central exterior, even the front and rear lights look very different.
The Sabre also has an 824 hp twin-turbo V8 and a claimed top speed of 218 miles per hour (350 kmph) making it one of the fastest McLaren cars ever made. With all this mind it’s almost hard to believe that the Sabre with it’s aggressive looks and insane performance and properties is indeed a road legal car.
With how special this car is it should come as no surprise that it’s ultra rare with MSO only producing 15 units of the Sabre for each client. In fact all 15 clients were involved in the entire design and production process of the car and it was their input that MSO had taken to create the final product.
Unlike the other McLaren hypercars, the Sabre went mostly under the radar and never really got the kind of attention their other cars got. Most probably just because of how exclusive it is and since it was made by MSO being a specialized division catering towards clients, it was not a car really shown to the public much as well.
With that being said I came across a video of an event called McLaren: The Legacy Lives On which took place in 2022 during the Singapore Grand Prix weekend where they actually put a red Sabre on public display, that’s how I came to know of its existence actually. I haven’t been able to find any other photo of the exact red one, but there are other examples such as a two tone orange and blue car (similar to the Formula 1 team colors) that has been spotted several times and another which went to auction but did not sell.
The McLaren Sabre is one of the most unique hypercars in recent times but what makes it even more fascinating to me is how exclusive the Sabre is, the fact it went mostly under the radar and how little is known about it despite it being one of the most special McLarens that were made.
