The Auto Madness event in Dubai gave me a great amount of interesting cars to photograph. One of them being the Porsche 911 Dakar Edition. Launched just earlier in 2023, the 911 Dakar Edition is one of the more unique cars that I saw over there.
What makes it so unique is that it is a 4 wheel drive, off road edition of the regular 911, with 4 wheel drive and off roading not being something you would normally associate supercars with. As of now the 911 Dakar is one of only two known supercar off roaders, the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato being the other one.
Though the 911 Dakar looks similar to most 911s (similar enough that I initially confused it for just another 911 but in a racing livery when I first saw it) there are clearly visible changes if you take a closer look. For example, the 911 Dakar sits on a higher platform, has higher ground clearance and all cars come with a specific set of special Pirelli off road tires in order to support the off road driving that the car’s been built and marketed for.
The 911 Dakar also comes with an optional white and blue racing livery with a number on the car if you want, being based on a real motorsport livery Porsche used during the Dakar Rally back in the 1984 which they won. With 2500 units to be produced, the 911 Dakar is quite a rare Porsche as well so with that in mind I’m glad to have come across one especially in that livery.
Interestingly enough, the 911 Dakar is already sold out. With Porsche seemingly getting a great success with the 911 Dakar with the car being sold out not long after it was launched, it will be interesting to see if the supercar off roader concept becomes a trend and if more manufacturers decide to follow in their steps.
