There are many colors one can have on a supercar today. The majority of owners usually go with traditional choices like red or black which naturally tend to fit the profile of a supercar. On the other hand, green is a color that asides from the dark British racing green was a color rarely ever considered, let alone used on sports cars or supercars and especially not in the brighter shades.
However in recent times, there has been a rise in popularity for green in supercars with owners even choosing brighter shades of the color.
But what exactly changed for green to become a more popular color in the supercar world? Well, the answer might just be with Lamborghini thanks to a shade called Verde Ithaca.
Lamborghini has gone with unique stand out colors before such as orange for example with the legendary Miura. They have even offered green on their cars before, but it was with the launch of their 2000s cars in the Gallardo and Murcielago when Verde Ithaca became a part of the Lamborghini color palette. I don’t think the color ever really took off with the Murcielago to be honest, since the majority of them from what I know were painted either in yellow or orange.
It is the Gallardo that has a completely different story. The color suited the styling of the smaller and lighter Gallardo and soon enough it quickly became a hit among Gallardo owners. Even Lamborghini noticed the rise in popularity of Verde Ithaca, with the Gallardo LP 570 Superleggera launched in the 2010 Geneva Motor Show being featured in it (it would also became the signature color for the Superleggera).
After the great success of the Gallardo and Verde Ithaca becoming such a hit on the car, it’s no surprise Lamborghini introduced other shades of green as well for the Aventador and Huracan models. Once again it ended up being Lamborghini’s V10 model in the Huracan along with the newer Urus SUV that would continue the trend, with green becoming one of the most popular color choices for both of the models to this day.
I think green works beautifully on Lamborghinis, especially the V10 models. One reason that comes to mind is that having such a stand out color really suits the smaller proportions of the Gallardo for example, especially the Superleggera with the added spoiler and black bits which combine well with it. There are plenty of other supercars from other manufacturers that offer shades of green now but I just don’t think green has the same kind of impact on them as they do on a Lamborghini, at least that’s my feeling.
There is no doubt in my mind that Lamborghini started a trend with its Verde Ithaca shade and that they’ve managed to make green as one of the most successful and iconic colors in their history.
