In 2023, BMW celebrated the 50th anniversary of their legendary M performance division by making the 3.0 CSL and it happens to be one of the rarest BMWs ever made as only 50 units of them were made.
Based on the M4 platform, the 2023 3.0 CSL is a tribute to the original 1974 3.0 CSL which BMW made for touring car championships. The 3.0 CSL has 553 hp, 10 more than the M4 CSL. There are many exterior and design changes from the M4 which include a smaller grill with a different pattern, a fixed rear wing and also a smaller inclined wing on the back side of the roof. Each of the 50 cars are painted in Alpine White as the base color and have the blue, white and red BMW M motorsport livery as well as special forged alloy wheels in a gold paint finish made just for this car.
Another thing. Although it doesn’t look like it, a lot of exterior panels of the car are actually made out of carbon fiber. The process of applying the base Alpine White paint and the BMW M motorsport livery on the carbon fiber panels is very specialized and is done by hand.
At a starting price of $780,000 the 3.0 CSL was already one of the most expensive new cars from BMW but within just two years after its introduction, prices for the 3.0 CSL have already skyrocketed to over a million with a recent example being listed by a dealer in Germany for $1.3 million and as one of the rarest BMWS around, don’t be surprised if the 3.0 CSL keeps rising in value.
I must say BMW M really went all out with this car. To some it may seem just like an enhanced M4 but really the 3.0 CSL feels a lot more than just that. The kind of design and manufacturing process that went into creating this car makes it without doubt one of the most complex and advanced creations from the German manufacturer. Then, the heritage it takes inspiration from and the anniversary it celebrates only adds to its status and makes the 3.0 CSL a true collector’s item both for BMW as well as other car enthusiasts and collectors.
Because of its rarity, status and the fact there isn’t really any other BMW quite like this, I think it is pretty clear the 2023 3.0 CSL is one of the most special BMWs in history.
