The world of vintage Porsches and especially vintage 911s, is fascinating. The 911 has been around for generations and as a result, there have been many models and variants of the 911 made over the years. One of these models that has recently caught my attention is the 964 Turbo 3.3 and you will find out why.
The 964 Turbo was introduced in 1990. It came with several changes from the earlier 930 Turbo, although it kept the same 3.3 liter engine and iconic rear wing. Around 3660 of these 964 Turbo 3.3s were produced in 1991 and 1992 so it’s actually kind of rare, I will also add the 964 as a whole had the lowest production numbers of any 911 generation and in recent years these cars have become quite sought after because of that.
But as 911 fans would know, one simply cannot talk about the 964 Turbo 3.3 without mentioning a very special variant, one that is considered a prized car for Porsche collectors and is among the rarest Porsche 911s ever made. I’m talking of course about the Porsche 964 Turbo S Lightweight.
So you might be wondering, isn’t the Turbo S just another variant in the 911 lineup? Well that might be the case for the modern generation of the 911 but back when you had the 964 generation, the Turbo S Lightweight was something exceptional. Only 86 units ever produced and at the time it was one of the fastest Porsche 911s thanks to its weight reduction, something Porsche did by sacrificing comfort and convenience features to enhance the cars power and performance. Another interesting thing about the 964 Turbo S Lightweight is that it was also the first 911 model to carry the Turbo S name.
After the production of the 964 Turbo 3.3 ended in 1992, Porsche then brought in a more powerful 3.6 liter Turbo which was only produced for one model year making it even rarer than the 3.3. That car has its own interesting story to tell.
It’s fascinating to see how the Porsche 911 with all its variants have progressed over the years and how they continue to make an impact, the 964 generation is a great example of how things can change with time. Initially it was only the rarer models of the 964 which gained immediate attention but these days models like the 964 Turbo 3.3 and even the more common 964 Carreras are becoming more sought after.
And I can see why too. I have found myself appreciating these 964 generation models, that’s why the Turbo caught my attention. It’s simple and beautiful, not overdesigned like how some modern supercars tend to be and on top of it, it gives out great performance. So really it’s no wonder that the demand of classic sports cars like the 964 have been rising.
