When Mercedes launched the newest generation of the SL class back in 2022, there were a lot of changes that came with new model. First, the 2022 SL would become an AMG only model, coming in as a replacement for the AMG GT Convertible. It came with three variants at the time of its launch with the SL63 AMG being the most powerful of them.
Some of the other major exterior changes include replacing the retractable hard top from the previous generations of the SL with a soft top instead, the addition of the traditional AMG style grill and the car having a more sleek, sporty look overall.
The SL63 AMG came with the AMG 4.0 liter V8 biturbo engine that can reach up to 577 horsepower while keeping the elements of luxury and usability that make it a solid all around package for a convertible. It didn’t remain the most powerful variant for long however as two years later Mercedes brought in the hybrid SL63 S E Performance which thanks to the added electric motor made a combined total of over 800 hp which made it not only the most powerful SL variant in this lineup but also the most powerful SL ever.
Mercedes would also bring in a Maybach version of the SL which focused purely on luxury known as the SL 680 Monogram Series. The launches of these 2 variants have put the original SL63 AMG in such a position where it’s outclassed both in performance and luxury. What might be the appeal for the SL63 AMG now that it is outclassed you might ask?
As I have mentioned before, the SL63 AMG is a solid overall package for a convertible and that’s something that would matter to a lot of people and not to mention it is still the most powerful pure V8 SL variant out there since the S E Performance is a hybrid.
The 2022 generation of the SL is certainly going to be remembered as the generation that changed the SL DNA and the SL63 AMG having been there from the start, still holds significance for many.
