So it looks like a small but insane collection of McLaren hypercars will be going up for auction on May 17th in the Mecum Indy 2025 auction.
The Dave Frecka Collection consists of the following McLarens. The 2020 McLaren Speedtail XP3, which happens to be one of the prototype cars used by McLaren for development. The Speedtail XP3 later became converted to what was apparently the most expensive customer Speedtail ever made mainly thanks to its all carbon exterior and countless features done by McLaren Special Operations. Not counting prototypes there were only 106 units of the Speedtail made, so this is an insane start here.
Then, you have this beast. A 2023 McLaren Solus GT, which is a single seater made exclusively for the track and almost literally a road version of a Formula 1 car. This example comes in the iconic Gulf blue and orange colors for the exterior with the matching interior seat, it is also #6 of only 25 cars to be produced.
The collection also has one of the most special McLarens out there in the Sabre, a car made by MSO exclusively for clients in the U.S. This Sabre pretty much matches the Speedtail XP3 spec with the same shade matching with the carbon fiber, although the Sabre here has wheels painted in a bright blue. This Sabre is #7 of 15 that were produced, making it the rarest McLaren in this collection.
It’s not seen in the main group photo but imagine my surprise when I see a very familiar Elva in the listing. Yes, it’s the same MSO Pacific Colorstream Elva I’ve featured in an earlier post of mine, car #122 of 149. Part of me wondered where that car went after it got sold earlier and it looks like I have the answer to that now. At least the car seems to have gotten some use as it now has 400 miles on the odometer compared to 89 when it was last put for sale in 2022.
Oh and besides the McLarens, there are also a LaFerrari and a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse being put up for auction coming from this collection. Certainly they will go for well in the millions just like the McLarens.
It’s definitely not often you see one hypercar put up for auction, let alone a whole collection of them. The fact most of the cars here are heavily loaded with spec and customization options make this even more of a special opportunity for collectors to get a chance to own something unique.
