I’ve been getting more interested in Le Mans and the kind of cars to do with it. One of them is the Porsche 911 GT1, a car I’ve started using in my latest car videogame GRID: Legends which is what started my interest in this car.
And it turns out the Porsche 911 GT1 is probably one of the craziest, most insane race cars ever designed. In fact, it is hard to find something about the GT1 that isn’t insane.
Back in the 1990’s endurance racing had something called the GT1 class which had the fastest performance cars at the time. The Porsche 911 GT1 was one of these cars. Even though the GT1 has 911 in the name, it doesn’t look anything like a normal 911 and instead looks more like a full on racing car with the aerodynamics, increased length, spoiler and general design.
The GT1 had a great record on the racetrack with several wins including at Le Mans in 1998 with the Mobil 1 livery, the livery which the car is remembered for today. The car’s highest known top speed was 330 kmph during a practice run for Le Mans in 1996 which for that time was quite an achievement.
The Porsche 911 GT1 also had a street version with only 20 units produced, even this version was insane. It was known to be an extremely difficult car to drive mainly because of the crazy aerodynamics as well as the performance and handling being more or less exactly like the Le Mans race car. It is almost hard to believe that Porsche were able to make a car as insane as this pass the test of being road legal with only a couple of changes to it. Additionally this street version is considered an extremely valuable car especially for Porsche collectors because of it’s rarity and direct connection to racing.
The GT1 remains as one of the most iconic and special Porsches ever created, with both the pure racing and the street legal versions being considered as some of the craziest supercars even today.
